A day in the old city: how to walk the fort, which havelis to see and why to end at the lake.
The Golden City on foot
Jaisalmer gets its name, the Golden City, from the yellow sandstone used across the fort and old town. In late afternoon the whole city seems to glow. The heritage core is compact and best seen on foot.
Jaisalmer Fort
Founded in the 12th century by Rawal Jaisal, the fort rises above the city on Trikuta Hill. Unusually, it is still lived in: a large number of people make their homes inside the walls. That makes it feel more like a neighbourhood than a monument.
Inside, the Fort Palace and the group of Jain temples are the main sights, known for their detailed stone carving. Allow a few hours. Opening hours and ticket prices can change, so check locally or ask Saim before you go.
- Go early for cooler, quieter lanes
- Wear good walking shoes
- Respect residents’ homes and privacy
- Dress modestly at the temples
The havelis
Havelis are the grand townhouses of Jaisalmer’s merchant families. Patwa Haveli is actually a cluster of five connected mansions with elaborate carved balconies. Nathmal Haveli nearby is known for its fine carving and the story that two brothers worked on its two halves.
Mandir Palace, the former royal residence outside the fort, has tall carved towers and is worth adding if you have time.
Markets
The lanes below the fort are full of small shops selling textiles, embroidery, mirror work, leather and silver. Take your time and compare a few shops. A local guide can point you to places that suit what you want.
Gadisar Lake
Gadisar Lake was built as the city’s water reservoir. Today it is lined with ghats, small temples and chhatris, with a decorated gateway at its entrance. It is calm in the early morning and especially lovely around sunset.
Seeing it with a local guide
